What Is the Rosary?

The Rosary is a form of prayer that combines vocal prayer with meditation on the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of His mother, Mary. The word "rosary" comes from the Latin rosarium, meaning "rose garden" — a beautiful image of offering a garland of prayers to Our Lady.

It is both simple and profound. On the surface, it is a repetition of familiar prayers — the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be. But beneath the surface, it is a school of contemplation. As your lips pray the familiar words, your mind and heart are invited to enter into the great mysteries of salvation: the Incarnation, the Passion, the Resurrection, and the glory of heaven.

Pope Saint John Paul II called the Rosary "my favorite prayer" and wrote an entire apostolic letter about it (Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 2002), in which he added the Luminous Mysteries to the traditional fifteen. Today the full Rosary consists of twenty mysteries.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Hold the crucifix and make the Sign of the Cross.
2. Holding the crucifix, pray the Apostles' Creed.
3. On the first large bead, pray the Our Father.
4. On each of the three small beads, pray a Hail Mary (for faith, hope, and charity).
5. Pray the Glory Be on the chain between the three beads and the first decade.
6. Announce the first mystery aloud or in your heart (e.g., "The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation").
7. On the large bead, pray the Our Father.
8. On each of the ten small beads, pray a Hail Mary while meditating on the mystery.
9. After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be.
10. Pray the Fatima Prayer: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins..."

• Use an app: Apps like "Rosary" or "Laudate" guide you through the prayers with audio, making it easy to learn while driving or walking.
• Don't worry about distractions: Every beginner (and every experienced pray-er) gets distracted. When you notice your mind has wandered, gently return to the mystery. The effort to return is itself a prayer.
• Pray it daily: The Rosary is most powerful when prayed consistently. Even one decade a day is better than a full Rosary once a week.
• Pray it with others: The family Rosary is one of the most powerful forms of family prayer. Our Lady of Fatima specifically asked for the daily family Rosary.

The 15 Promises of the Rosary

Our Lady is said to have given Saint Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche fifteen promises for those who faithfully pray the Rosary. Among the most beloved:

• Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.
• I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
• The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
• The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.
• Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune.
• Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces.
