St. Jude Prayer: Powerful Prayers for Impossible Cases & Desperate Situations

When all hope seems lost — when doctors have given up, when relationships have broken down, when the situation seems truly impossible — Catholics turn to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron of desperate cases and impossible causes.

The St. Jude prayer invokes the patron of hopeless causes — "St. Jude, apostle and martyr, pray for us who have recourse to thee" — for desperate situations when human help fails. Jude was a cousin of Jesus and author of the New Testament epistle.

St. Jude is one of the most beloved and most invoked saints in the Catholic Church. His name appears in newspaper thank-you notices around the world: "Thank you, St. Jude, for prayers answered." Millions of Catholics have experienced his powerful intercession in their most desperate moments.

If you are facing an impossible situation right now — a serious illness, a broken relationship, a financial crisis, a legal problem, a family emergency — this guide gives you the prayers and the faith to ask St. Jude for his intercession.

Why St. Jude for Impossible Cases?

St. Jude Thaddeus was one of the twelve apostles — a cousin of Jesus and the brother of St. James the Less. He is the author of the short Letter of Jude in the New Testament. He was martyred in Persia around 65 AD, traditionally with an axe or club.

The reason St. Jude became associated with impossible cases is somewhat ironic: his name is so similar to Judas Iscariot that for centuries, people were reluctant to invoke him, fearing confusion. As a result, his shrine received few petitions — and when people finally did turn to him, they were in such desperate situations that only a miracle would help. And miracles came. His reputation as the patron of impossible cases grew from there.

St. Jude's feast day is October 28, shared with St. Simon the Apostle.

The Traditional Prayer to St. Jude

    Prayer to St. Jude Thaddeus

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude Thaddeus, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly [mention your request here], and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.

The Nine-Day Novena to St. Jude

A novena is nine days of prayer for a specific intention. The Novena to St. Jude is one of the most powerful and most prayed novenas in the Catholic Church. Pray this prayer once a day for nine consecutive days.

Novena to St. Jude (Daily Prayer)

O most holy apostle, Saint Jude Thaddeus, I salute you through the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Through His Heart I praise and thank God for all the graces He has bestowed upon you. Humbly prostrating myself before you, I implore you, through the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to look down upon me from the heights of Heaven and to intercede for me in my present and urgent petition and need. [Mention your request here.]

Recommend my cause to the mercy of God, and by your intercession obtain for me the divine assistance I so greatly need. I am so helpless and alone. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings.

O glorious apostle Saint Jude, I will be ever mindful of this great favor. I will honor you as my special and powerful patron and encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Say 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys, and 3 Glory Bes.

Short Prayer to St. Jude for Urgent Help

St. Jude, apostle and martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depths of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Amen.

Prayer to St. Jude for Healing

Glorious St. Jude, apostle and martyr, I come to you in my hour of need. The doctors have done what they can. The situation seems hopeless. But I know that with God, nothing is impossible, and that you have been given special power to intercede in desperate cases.

I ask you to bring my petition before the throne of God: [name the person and the illness]. May God's healing power touch [name] and restore them to health, if it is His holy will. Give them strength to bear their suffering with faith and peace. Give their family the grace to support them with love.

St. Jude, I trust in your intercession. I will make your name known if my prayer is answered. Amen.

How to Pray to St. Jude Effectively

Praying to St. Jude is not magic — it is an act of faith. Here are some principles for praying to him effectively:

    • Be specific. Tell St. Jude exactly what you need. God already knows, but naming your need is an act of faith and attention.
    • Pray with faith. "Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (Mark 11:24). Pray with confidence in God's power and St. Jude's intercession.
    • Pray persistently. The novena is nine days for a reason. Persistent prayer is an expression of love and trust. Don't give up after one prayer.
    • Surrender the outcome. After presenting your petition, add "Thy will be done." God may answer in a way you did not expect — but He always answers.
    • Give thanks. Many Catholics publish thank-you notices in newspapers after St. Jude answers their prayers. This is a beautiful tradition of gratitude and witness.

    The Shrine of St. Jude

The most famous shrine to St. Jude in the United States is the National Shrine of St. Jude at the Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago, Illinois. It was established in 1929 by the Claretian Missionaries and has been a place of pilgrimage for millions of Catholics seeking St. Jude's intercession.

Another major shrine is the National Shrine of St. Jude in Baltimore, Maryland. In Europe, the most important shrine is at the Church of St. Jude in Faversham, England.

"Never be afraid to bring your most impossible situations to St. Jude. He was given this special patronage precisely for the cases that seem beyond all human hope."
