How to Grow in Humility: The Catholic Path to True Greatness
Humility is the foundation of the entire spiritual life. Without it, no virtue can stand. With it, every other virtue flourishes. Yet it is perhaps the most misunderstood and most countercultural virtue in the Catholic tradition.

We live in a culture that celebrates self-promotion, personal branding, and the relentless assertion of one's own worth. Social media rewards those who project confidence, success, and superiority. In this environment, the Catholic virtue of humility can seem not only countercultural but positively dangerous — a recipe for being overlooked, undervalued, and walked over.
But this is a profound misunderstanding of what humility actually is. True humility is not weakness, self-deprecation, or the denial of one's gifts. It is something far more radical and far more liberating: it is the truth about oneself before God. And it is the foundation on which every other virtue — and every authentic relationship — is built.
What Humility Really Is: Truth About Oneself Before God
St. Teresa of Avila gave one of the most precise definitions of humility in the Catholic tradition: "Humility is truth." To be humble is to see yourself as you truly are — no more, no less. It means acknowledging your gifts without pride (they are gifts from God, not achievements of your own making) and acknowledging your weaknesses without despair (God's grace is sufficient for every weakness).
St. Thomas Aquinas defined humility as the virtue by which a person, knowing himself accurately, holds himself in low esteem — not because he is worthless, but because he recognizes that everything good in him comes from God. The humble person does not think less of themselves than they are; they think of themselves less, because their attention is directed toward God and others rather than toward themselves.
This is why humility is the foundation of the spiritual life. Pride — the opposite of humility — is the root of all sin. It was pride that caused Lucifer's fall ("I will not serve"). It was pride that caused Adam and Eve's fall ("You will be like God"). And it is pride that underlies every sin we commit: the assertion of our own will over God's, the placing of ourselves at the center of the universe.
Humility in Scripture
The Scriptures are saturated with the call to humility. Jesus makes it explicit: "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:4). He also says: "Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29). Humility is not just a virtue Jesus recommends — it is a virtue He embodies and invites us to learn from Him directly.
St. Paul's letter to the Philippians contains one of the most beautiful passages on humility in all of Scripture: "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:3–8).
This passage — the great kenosis hymn — presents the Incarnation itself as the supreme act of humility. God became man. The Creator became a creature. The Lord became a servant. This is the model of humility that every Catholic is called to imitate.

Jesus as the Model of Humility
Every aspect of Jesus's life is a lesson in humility. He was born not in a palace but in a stable. He grew up in an obscure village in Galilee, the son of a carpenter. He spent 30 of His 33 years in hiddenness and ordinary work. When He began His public ministry, He was baptized by John — a lesser figure — and submitted to the ritual of repentance even though He had no sin. He washed His disciples' feet at the Last Supper, taking the role of the lowest servant. And He died the most shameful death imaginable — crucified between two criminals, naked, abandoned by most of His friends.
This is the God we worship. And He says to us: "Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart." The imitation of Christ is, at its core, the imitation of His humility.
The 12 Degrees of Humility: St. Benedict's Ladder
St. Benedict of Nursia (480–547), the father of Western monasticism, devoted an entire chapter of his Rule to humility. He described 12 degrees of humility — a ladder by which the monk ascends from the fear of God to the perfect love of God. These degrees are not merely for monks; they are a roadmap for every Catholic who wants to grow in this foundational virtue.
The 12 degrees move from interior dispositions (keeping the fear of God always before one's eyes, not loving one's own will) through exterior behaviors (enduring hardships without complaint, confessing one's sins, believing oneself lower than others) to the final degree: a humble bearing of the body that reflects the interior disposition of the heart. Benedict's insight is that humility is not just an interior attitude — it shapes how we carry ourselves, how we speak, how we relate to others.
Pride as the Root of All Sin
The Catholic tradition has consistently identified pride as the root of all sin and the first of the seven deadly sins. This is not merely a moral observation — it is a theological one. Pride is the fundamental disorder of the will: the assertion of the self against God, the refusal to acknowledge one's creaturely dependence, the desire to be the center of one's own universe.
Every sin, at its root, involves some form of pride: the pride that says "I know better than God what is good for me," or "My pleasure matters more than my neighbor's dignity," or "I don't need to ask forgiveness because I haven't really done anything wrong." Conversely, every virtue, at its root, involves some form of humility: the acknowledgment that God is God and I am not, that my neighbor is as important as I am, that I need grace to do anything good.
Practical Exercises for Growing in Humility
Humility is not just a disposition — it is a virtue, and virtues are developed through practice. Here are concrete exercises for growing in humility:
Accept Correction Gracefully
When someone corrects you — whether a boss, a spouse, a friend, or a stranger — resist the impulse to defend yourself immediately. Take a breath. Consider whether the correction has merit. If it does, thank the person and resolve to change. If it does not, respond calmly and without anger. The humble person is not threatened by correction because their identity is not built on being right.
Serve Others Without Recognition
Look for opportunities to serve others in ways that will not be noticed or praised. Clean up after a meeting without being asked. Help a neighbor without telling anyone. Volunteer for the unglamorous tasks at your parish. Jesus said: "When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Matthew 6:3).
Avoid Self-Promotion
Notice how often you steer conversations toward your own accomplishments, opinions, or experiences. Practice the discipline of asking questions and listening more than you speak. When you have done something good, resist the urge to mention it. Let your work speak for itself.
Pray the Litany of Humility
The Litany of Humility, attributed to Cardinal Merry del Val, is one of the most powerful prayers for growing in this virtue. It asks God to deliver us from the desire to be esteemed, loved, praised, honored, preferred, consulted, and approved — and to grant us the desire to be despised, forgotten, humiliated, and treated as nothing. It is a demanding prayer, but a transformative one.
Make a Daily Examination of Conscience
At the end of each day, review your interactions and ask: Where did pride show up today? Where did I seek recognition, avoid criticism, or assert my own will over others? Bring these moments to God in prayer and ask for the grace to do better tomorrow.
Humility and Prayer: The Connection
Humility and prayer are inseparable. The humble person knows they need God — that without Him they can do nothing (John 15:5). This awareness drives them to prayer. Conversely, authentic prayer deepens humility: the more we encounter the infinite holiness of God, the more clearly we see our own smallness and need.
The saints consistently teach that pride is the greatest obstacle to prayer. The proud person approaches God as an equal, or even as a creditor to whom God owes something. The humble person approaches God as a creature before the Creator, a child before a Father, a sinner before a Savior. This posture opens the soul to receive what God wants to give.
Humility and the Eucharist
The Eucharist is the school of humility. In the Eucharist, God — the infinite, omnipotent Creator — humbles Himself to become present under the appearance of a small piece of bread. He allows Himself to be handled, distributed, consumed. He makes Himself available to every person who approaches the altar, regardless of their worthiness.
When we receive the Eucharist with faith, we are not only receiving Christ — we are being conformed to His humility. The centurion's prayer before Communion — "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed" — is a perfect expression of Eucharistic humility: the acknowledgment of our unworthiness and the trust in God's mercy.
Saints Known for Humility
The Catholic tradition is rich with examples of heroic humility. Three stand out in particular:
St. Francis of Assisi was the son of a wealthy merchant who gave up everything — literally stripping off his fine clothes in the public square — to follow Christ in radical poverty. He called himself "the greatest of sinners" and refused any position of authority in the order he founded. His humility was not performance — it was the fruit of a profound encounter with the crucified Christ.
St. Thérèse of Lisieux developed what she called the "Little Way" — a spirituality of spiritual childhood in which she embraced her smallness and weakness as the very means by which God could work most powerfully. She wrote: "I am too little to climb the rough stairway of perfection. I will seek an elevator which will raise me to Jesus — for I am too small to climb the rough stairway of perfection." Her humility was not self-deprecation but a joyful acceptance of her creaturely dependence on God.
St. Joseph is perhaps the greatest model of humble hiddenness in the entire Catholic tradition. He appears in the Gospels without a single recorded word. He was the foster father of the Son of God and the husband of the Mother of God — and yet he lived in obscurity, working with his hands, protecting his family, and asking for nothing in return. The Church calls him the "Terror of Demons" precisely because his humility was so complete that the enemy had no foothold in him.
