This conviction leads the Church to defend human life at every stage — from the moment of fertilization to natural death — and against every threat: abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, unjust war, and the many other ways in which human life is threatened in the modern world.
The Foundation: Every Human Life Is Sacred
The Church's pro-life teaching begins with a foundational conviction about the nature of human life. Every human being — regardless of age, size, ability, race, or condition — possesses an inherent dignity that cannot be taken away. This dignity is not conferred by the state, by society, or by any human authority. It is given by God at the moment of creation.

God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being."

Abortion: The Church's Clear and Consistent Teaching
The Catholic Church's teaching on abortion is one of the clearest and most consistent in the history of moral theology. From the earliest Christian writings — including the Didache (c. 100 AD), which explicitly condemns abortion — to the present day, the Church has never wavered in its condemnation of direct abortion.

The Catechism continues: "Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law" (CCC 2271).
The gravity of abortion is reflected in the Church's canonical penalty. Canon 1398 of the Code of Canon Law provides that a person who procures a completed abortion incurs an automatic excommunication (latae sententiae). This applies to the woman who procures the abortion and to those who cooperate in it — including doctors, nurses, and others who make it possible. This is one of the most serious penalties in canon law, reflecting the gravity of the act.

When Does Life Begin?
The Church teaches that human life begins at fertilization — the moment when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg, creating a new, genetically distinct human organism. From the moment of fertilization, the new organism has its own unique DNA, its own developmental trajectory, and its own life.
The Catechism states: "From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person" (CCC 2270). This means that the embryo, from the moment of fertilization, is a human person with an inviolable right to life.
Some argue that personhood begins at a later stage — at implantation, at viability, at birth, or at some other point. The Church rejects all such arguments. The question of when a human being becomes a person is not a question that science alone can answer — it is a philosophical and theological question. But the Church teaches that the only safe and just position is to recognize the full humanity and personhood of the human being from the moment of fertilization.
Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

The Church distinguishes between euthanasia (directly causing death) and the legitimate withdrawal of extraordinary means of life support. Pro-Life Prayers

How Catholics Can Live Pro-Life
