Catholic Prayers for Protection: Against Evil, Danger & Spiritual Attack

The Catholic tradition is rich with prayers for protection — against physical danger, spiritual attack, evil, and the devil. These are not superstitions; they are expressions of faith in God's power and love, and in the intercession of the angels and saints who stand with us in the spiritual battle.

Catholic prayers for protection include St. Michael prayer, Psalm 91, Guardian Angel prayer, and St. Benedict medal blessing — trusting God while using approved sacramentals. Protection is spiritual; avoid superstition or occult counter-practices.

The Catholic Church has always recognized that human beings live in a world where spiritual forces are at work — both good and evil. St. Paul writes: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). In response to this reality, the Church has developed a rich treasury of prayers for protection — prayers that have been prayed by saints, martyrs, and ordinary Catholics for centuries.

These prayers are not magic formulas. They are acts of faith — expressions of trust in God's protection and in the intercession of the angels and saints. They work not by their own power but by the power of God, to whom they are addressed.

    1. The Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

The most widely used Catholic prayer for protection is the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1886. According to tradition, Leo XIII had a vision of a conversation between God and the devil, in which the devil was given 75-100 years to try to destroy the Church. Shaken by this vision, Leo XIII composed this prayer and ordered it to be said after every Low Mass — a practice that continued until the Second Vatican Council.

    Prayer to Saint Michael

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

    2. Saint Patrick's Breastplate (Lorica)

Saint Patrick's Breastplate — also called the Lorica of Saint Patrick — is one of the oldest and most powerful prayers for protection in the Christian tradition. Attributed to St. Patrick (5th century), it is a prayer of total consecration to Christ, invoking His protection in every aspect of life. The full prayer is long; here is the most famous section:

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
    Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

    3. Psalm 91: The Psalm of Protection

Psalm 91 is the great biblical prayer of protection — the psalm that the devil quoted to Jesus during the temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:6), and that Jesus refused to use as a test of God's power. It is one of the most prayed psalms in the Catholic tradition, especially in times of danger or fear:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."

Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart...

    "Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
    He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him."

    — Psalm 91:1-4, 14-15

    4. The Rosary as Protection

Our Lady of Fatima promised that the Rosary is a powerful weapon against evil: "Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war." Many saints and popes have called the Rosary the most powerful prayer after the Mass. Praying the Rosary daily is one of the most effective forms of spiritual protection available to Catholics.

The Fatima prayer, added to the Rosary after the 1917 apparitions, is itself a prayer for protection: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy."

    5. The Memorare

The Memorare is a prayer to the Virgin Mary for protection and intercession, attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (12th century). It is one of the most beloved Marian prayers in the Catholic tradition:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

    6. Prayer Against Evil Spirits

Prayer of Exorcism (Minor) — for Personal Use

Lord Jesus Christ, I ask You to protect me and my family from all sickness, from all harm, and from all accidents. If I have given any foothold to the enemy through my own fault, I ask Your forgiveness. I reclaim that ground and give it back to You, Lord. I ask You to bind all evil spirits that are at work in my life and in the lives of those I love. I ask this in Your holy name. Amen.

    7. The Armor of God (Ephesians 6)

St. Paul's description of the "armor of God" in Ephesians 6:13-17 is both a theological teaching and a prayer framework. Many Catholics pray through each piece of the armor as a morning prayer of protection:

    • Belt of truth — Lord, gird me with Your truth today.
    • Breastplate of righteousness — Protect my heart with Your righteousness.
    • Shoes of the gospel of peace — Let me walk in Your peace.
    • Shield of faith — Let my faith extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
    • Helmet of salvation — Protect my mind with the assurance of my salvation.
    • Sword of the Spirit — Let Your Word be my weapon against all evil.

    Sacramentals for Protection

In addition to prayers, the Catholic tradition offers several sacramentals — blessed objects — that are used for protection:

    • The Saint Benedict Medal — One of the most powerful sacramentals against evil. The medal bears the Vade Retro Satana ("Begone, Satan") inscription and is used for protection against the devil, evil, and temptation.
    • Holy Water — Blessed water is a powerful sacramental for protection. Sprinkling holy water in your home, on yourself, and on your family is a traditional Catholic practice for warding off evil.
    • The Brown Scapular — Our Lady of Mount Carmel promised that those who die wearing the Brown Scapular will not suffer eternal fire.
    • The Miraculous Medal — Given by Our Lady to St. Catherine Labouré in 1830, with the promise of special graces for those who wear it with confidence.

"Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."

    — Ephesians 6:11
