What Advent is (and is not)
Advent is a season of waiting, not early Christmas. Violet vestments, restrained decor, and penitential fasting (especially Ember Days where observed) train desire for Christ. U.S. culture rushes Christmas music; Catholics can keep Advent Advent.
Advent wreath: bless it the first Sunday
Four candles — three violet, one rose for Gaudete. Light one more each week with a short prayer. Children respond well to a visible countdown that is not Santa-centric.
Prepare spiritually before Black Friday
Schedule Confession, choose a charity gift budget, and download an Advent reading plan. Catholic Bible Online publishes a full Advent 2026 novena and preparation guide with daily links.
Scripture during Advent
Isaiah, John the Baptist, and Mary magnify the season. Use daily Bible verses or read the Sunday Gospel on Catholic Bible Online each Monday.
